Tour of the Garbage Chute

On Sunday morning, Roshan Rai from the NGO Dajreeling Ladenla Road Prerna, the same NGO I am working with, lead a group of school kids on a tour of waste management in Darjeeling.  The tour, which was part of the World Environment Day events, included a visit to the slaughterhouse and garbage chute.  Darjeeling’s waste management system was designed in the 1930’s and hasn’t been updated since.  The impact on Darjeeling’s inhabitants is sever, especially with the contamination of scarce water supplies.  The goal of the waste management visits is to shock the youth into action around reducing resource intake and implementing daily conservation practices.
