John: I have an idea that has become hopelessly bogged down in the thesis critique process of defending myself every week. If nothing else, I've been reminded of the drawbacks in coming at a process from the defensive. Luckily I don't have class in this coming week, so I'll go for reading unrelated stuff. I have no lack of inspiration really. It's just a matter of feeling confident enough to hold my ground in class. Usually, I hold my ground by being a moving target! You've got an impressive body of work as it is. I'd start sketching out a couple of ideas you are excited about. Keep it light and free. What are you curious about? What do you care about? What interests *you* the most? What kind of work would you be interested in seeing? What would an anti-portfolio look like? Something to subvert or challenge the status quo and engage with the world? Then forget it all and read something unrelated. Inspiration strikes when you're looking in the other direction. Don’t worry about the portfolio pressure.
